Powerschool Coding for VAL Students

Powerschool Coding for VAL Students

Students who graduate through Vermont Adult Learning and the High School Completion Program (HSCP) and receive a BHS diploma are reported to the state, as per the state guidance:

Q13: We have a student returning from VAL to graduate. Do we need to report her in SLDS?

If you are going to give this student a high school diploma, enroll them for one day at the end of the year, then exit them the next day using 08 “Graduated with regular diploma”. They should be reported in SLDS.
To make this easy, please code them as follows.

Students who are graduating outside of the normal graduation date, or if End of Year rollover has already occurred

The following process, which uses the How to Graduate a Student Early Before EOY process, will ensure the record ends up in the correct state.
First, enroll the student in BHS with the following information:
  1. School: BHS
  2. Entry Date: Day of Graduation
  3. Entry Code: 07 (Re-entry after Withdrawal)
  4. Entry Comment: As a normal comment, making sure to include that the student graduated through VAL
  5. Exit Date: Day after Graduation
  6. Exit Code: 08 (Graduated from High School)
  7. FTE: Full Time
  8. Grade Level: 12
  9. Adult Without Diploma: If appropriate
  10. District of Residence: Burlington
  11. Admission Status: HSCP Student (09)
Then, create a new enrollment with the following information:
  1. School: GS
  2. Entry Date: Day after Graduation
  3. Entry Code: 20 (Graduated Student)
  4. Exit Date: Day after Graduation
  5. Exit Code 08 (Graduated from High School)
  6. Other Fields: as defined in the How to Graduate a Student Early Before EOY article
  7. Scheduling Setup, as defined in the article.

Students who are graduating with the rest of the seniors

You can use this shortened process, and let the End of Year rollover handle the rest.
Enroll the student at BHS. Make sure they are Enrolled, not Transferred out. Their enrollment should have the following information:
  1. School: BHS
  2. Entry Date: Day of Graduation
  3. Entry Code: 07 (Re-entry after Withdrawal)Entry Comment: As a normal comment, making sure to include that the student graduated through VAL
  4. FTE: Full Time
  5. Grade Level: 12
  6. Adult Without Diploma: If appropriate
  7. District of Residence: Burlington
  8. Admission Status: HSCP Student (09)
They also need their Scheduling Setup to include:
  1. Next Year Grade: 99
  2. Next School Indicator: Graduated Students
  3. Year of Graduation: (year)
