AOE Regulations Re: Attendance 10 Days of Consecutive Absences
This is from the State Register:
11. Each student’s attendance should be monitored so that a student is not absent for 10 or more consecutive school days without an investigation. The school must make a good faith effort to determine the reason for the absence or the
days the student is not attending classes
Email from Gloria to VP and KV
If a student has 10 consecutive unexcused absences, then the truancy letters must go out immediately. Without response, we must exit them with “Discontinued Schooling.” If they then come back, we need to re-enroll them. We are not being consistent throughout the district which is understandable. But we have to follow the rules, regardless.
I know for a fact that truancy letters sometimes don’t go out until a month later. In which case, the student should have already been exited.
From Barry G. 9/23/2020
I'm familiar with BSD attendance tracking and truancy notification procedures, all the way to filing an affidavit in court in some cases. Diana is our expert on the procedures and how they have been implemented at each school over the years. As Victor says, I've never heard of us exiting students from our system in the way you described. I'm pretty sure Diana has never been involved with doing that, nor was there any expectation that she would be.
From VP Email
In terms of the truancy piece this seems really clear to me. What Kathy S. is suggesting seems to follow these guidelines in that she just doesn't want us to give up on these kids. Maybe we can have Diana be the official person and guidance be the ones to continue to bird dog this after 10 days?
